Hailed by Robert Thicknesse, Opera Critic for The Times as “…a company that is easily the most adventurous of our big houses…” . Opera North, is acclaimed as a vibrant organisation that fearlessly challenges established perceptions of opera.
Since its creation twenty six years ago, the company has been committed to exciting and entertaining wide audiences by breathing new life into the classics, revealing rarely seen works and championing new artists. Their desire to challenge and inspire has established them as one of the leading and most imaginative opera houses in Europe .
Recognised as England 's National Opera Company outside London, Opera North collaborates with many other art forms and companies to lead people beyond their experience and expectations. Their critically celebrated Chorus and versatile Orchestra also perform independently, constantly revitalising approaches to music making.
Opera North Education is renowned as a pioneer in the field. Using opera to inspire and develop creativity not only for children but also young people, those with disabilities and the wider community, the department provides a valuable cultural resource across the whole of the region.
This is a pivotal moment in the Company's history. Opera North, Leeds Grand Theatre and Leeds City Council are working together in close partnership to raise the funds for and deliver a hugely ambitious Transformation project, at a total cost of £30m. The refurbishment of the theatre, restoration of the Assembly Rooms and the creation of England's first publicly funded opera centre outside London will create a national centre of excellence, bringing Opera North's artistic development and education work onto one site.
