The Business

Monsoon Plc operates over two brands; Monsoon and Accessorize. It is a design led business that focuses on fashion and creativity. Monsoon’s main objective is to provide customers with an experience completely different to those offered by other businesses, in both product offering and customer service.

The Role

Monsoon were looking for a Footwear Buyer to join their specialised accessories team. The role was very specific in the fact that the successful candidate needed to have a strong background working within footwear and a sound understanding of the industry trends. A buyer’s role encompasses a number of responsibilities including; matching a commercial product mix to the brand values and image when buying product, analysing sales performance to make the most of sales opportunities and rectify poor performance, working closely with the visual team in order to convey the messages and images that encompass the Monsoon brand.

The Solution

The consultant has a very long standing relationship with the business and as such was aware of the types and attitudes of people that they are keen to employ.
This role was different to other buying positions that had been completed previously as the level was slightly lower. They wanted somebody in a junior role wanting and ready to make the next step into a more senior position, which meant that more people had to be approached to be networked for recommendations. It was more difficult to gauge the level of individuals as there were a number of potential candidates with similar job titles but varying degrees of responsibility. Many interviews of various probing questions were undertaken and from this 3 people were put forward at the right level.

The process was two stages and at second stage the candidates had to produce an in-depth presentation regarding the footwear industry and demonstrate their understanding of it. From this stage an offer was made and accepted.
