Tesco
Buyer
The Business
As one of the largest retail businesses in the UK and with a strong presence internationally, Tesco are continually expanding their product offering. Clothing has become a major part of their product portfolio with impressive growth over the last few years. We have been working closely with Tesco on a number of placements since an initial meeting with the business towards the end of 2006.
The Role
Due to the business’ growth, an additional resource was needed specifically within the boyswear department. The role was a selector position which involves choosing from existing UK ranges, but with a view to focusing on product development in future. With regards to the culture, people would need to be comfortable working in a highly commercial large organisation which is very fast paced. The right person would need to be tenacious and likes a challenge; someone who can adapt to the growth of the role was essential. In terms of particular skills, a buyer who had previously had product development experience was needed.
The Solution
This role was seen as a priority for Tesco and as such we were asked to focus on this role above the other vacancies we had been briefed on. We conducted a database search and whilst one candidate withdrew in the early stages, several more candidates were found to interview for the position. A number of CV’s were presented to the business with one standing out above all others. Due to the suitability of the candidate she was immediately seen at an assessment centre, skipping the first initial screening process. The job was offered and accepted very shortly afterwards.
